Simulations in Surfing: Improve Your Technique Out of the Water

Surfing is a sport that combines skill, balance, and technique. While water practice is essential, there are ways to improve even before you hit the waves: surf simulations. These dryland techniques are ideal for developing muscle memory, refining movements, and building confidence—regardless of your experience level.

At Kalani Surf Academy, we use simulations as part of our holistic approach to help you advance. In this article, discover how these practices can perfectly complement your time in the water.

What Are Surf Simulations?

Surf simulations involve replicating key movements outside of the water, such as paddling, take-offs, or turns. This allows surfers to focus on improving their technique in a controlled environment, free from wave pressure.

Benefits of Dryland Surf Simulations

    • Muscle memory: Repeating movements builds motor patterns that translate into better performance in the water.
    • Technical correction: Helps fine-tune posture, balance, and timing.
    • Mental preparation: Simulating specific maneuvers reduces uncertainty and boosts confidence in the lineup.
    • Accessibility: Can be practiced anywhere, with or without specialized equipment.

Surf Simulation Exercises

1. Paddling Simulation

Paddling is essential for catching waves efficiently. Practicing it on land helps build strength and improve technique.

    • How to do it:
        • Lie face down on a flat surface, like a board or mat.
        • Move your arms in alternating circular motions, as if paddling.
        • Keep your torso stable and focus on long, smooth strokes.

2. Take-Off Simulation

The take-off is a key movement for getting up on your board. Practicing it repeatedly improves speed and balance.

    • How to do it:
        • Lie face down with your hands under your chest.
        • Push up and bring your front foot forward and back foot back in one smooth motion.
        • Keep your knees bent and your eyes facing forward.

3. Turn Simulations (Bottom Turn and Top Turn)

Turns are essential for making the most of each wave. Simulating them out of the water lets you work on coordination and body weight distribution.

    • How to do it:
        • Stand in a surf stance on a board or flat surface.
        • Simulate a bottom turn by rotating your torso inward and shifting weight to your back leg.
        • For the top turn, shift weight to your front leg and rotate your torso in the opposite direction.

4. Balance Exercises

Balance is key in surfing. Tools like a balance board or Bosu can help improve stability.

    • How to do it:
        • Stand in a surf stance on the balance board.
        • Practice holding your balance while mimicking compression and extension movements.

How to Integrate Simulations into Your Routine

Before Getting in the Water

Spend 10–15 minutes on paddling, take-off, and turning exercises to warm up your muscles and prepare your mind.

In Your Weekly Training

Incorporate 2–3 sessions of simulations along with strength and flexibility workouts to boost your overall performance.

Review and Analyze

Record yourself during simulations and compare the footage with your water sessions or videos of professional surfers. This will help you identify areas for improvement and adjust your technique accordingly.
